Mokume-gane Is the Japanese metalworking procedure which produces a mixed laminate with distinctive layered patterns as well as that laminate itself. In this particular piece Gold and Silver have been laminated through the Mokume-gane procedure to make the most unique and distinguished of jewelry specimens. This piece was adorned with Petrified Palm Root from the Americas and Sugilite from South Africa. The unique nature of both the palm root and the Sugilite are beautiful in contrast together. The sugilite provides wonderful floral like patterns in its natural banded nature while the palm root provides a warm earthy texture that compliments the stunning metal work. Pieces of this nature are virtually gone from existence due to the art craft of the making of the jewelry is no longer being practiced nor passed down. It is a long held secret as to the nature of how to make this laminated metal. This lost art is all but extinct. By the mid 20th century, mokume gane was almost entirely unknown. Japan’s movement away from traditional craftwork, paired with the great difficulty of mastering the mokume gane art, had brought mokume gane artisans to the brink of extinction. This piece is 100% made by one artists hands and can never be replicated. This is one of the last pieces in the world that will ever be seen in this type of display.
